Reviews for "Custom Pocket-Hole Plug Cutter"

Over-performed my already high expectations

as my title says "over-performed my already high expectations". Not only can you make your own plugs, you can choose the same grain and color of wood species on your current project for that invisible look. This saves you a lot of time and money as you are fabricating your own plugs. Thus saving more money from not wasting gas to run to a hardware store for more plugs that most likely not the same color as your project. Would i buy another? Yes! For those complaining about this product: 1) Price: the price is properly placed as the wood plugs you buy in your favorite hardware store will charge about $6 (US) for a box and you most likely will not get the grain, color or species as your current project. Please know that for that price you are producing your own product. 2) Results: for those complaining about the quality of the plugs, please note the following; a) did you read the user manual? b) did you choose quality wood and not some junk, scrap (or reject) woods? c) are you forcing the drill bit and/or properly fixing the wood to the tool?

Fun and easy to use!

A week or so ago, I found out Kreg no longer offers ready-to-use walnut or cherry pocket hole plugs. What!?!? Then I found they were offering this "custom" pocket hole plug cutter. I thought "great, I'm trapped without it.. must be nice to charge $70 for a ridiculous add-on product to my Kreg." I bought it yesterday very reluctantly, and used it today for the first time. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars!! It worked perfectly, was fun and easy to use right out of the box (used a corded drill and went s-l-o-w)! Today I made roughly 18 walnut plugs and didn't have one reject, tho it did have consistent tear out near the tip of the plug, so I need to finesse my skill a little. Now I'm glad I kept all those small and seemingly useless cutoffs from a number of projects.

Quality not as good as purchased plugs

Bought the custom plug cutter along with the HD unit. The custom cutter gave me trouble until Kreg tech support suggested the following: Insert cutter into jig, touch work piece, the pull back before turning drill on. Use corded drill if possible. Don’t force bit into work piece and let cutter do the work. Be sure to use vac attachment. I followed these instructions ... still with some tear out in pine plugs. Will keep practicing — right now yielding about 50-60% fairly good, usable plugs. Cut plugs are nowhere near the quality of purchased Kreg plugs.

bill in carolina

Just bought plug cutter and tried it out. Seemed to work great. Set the drill on highest speed and used slow feed rate letting the drill do the work. Only messed up two plugs while the others were good. Even tried plywood and turned out good. I imagine that too much plywood will not be good on the cutter but had to know.

Pocket hole plug cutter

I make custom furniture out of a variety of woods. I sure was glad to see you come up with a hole plug cutter that actually works. You have always been A leader in your field. Your customer service is extremely helpful when I have a problem or question. Please keep up the good work. Donot lower your standards. Yes, it does take time to learn how to cut the plugs and at what speed your drill needs to be. A very valuable tool to help the woodworker produce a higher quality product. (Custom furniture)

I bought this plug cutter with the expectations of it being as great as my other kreg products, big let down !! The plugs come out chipped or splintered.I have tried slowing the speed down and speeding the speed up but I get the same results. I have tried it with red oak, pine and maple and get the same results, seems to me for the almost 75 dollars I spent for it ( including tax ) I could have just bought almost 500 of the precut ones. Sorry kreg I love my other kreg stuff but this was a big let down !!!!

Worth the investment

when I purchased my K4 master jig. I was asked when I registered the jig if I was interested making my own plugs. I received last fall an email from Kreg that a plug cutter was available . I purchased this cutter and used it last week for the first time. Reading the instructions I selected my craftsman 19v drill and used low speed. Cutting plugs from pine wood for a toy box worked well, I did have issues cutting across the grain but no issues with the grain. I do not think my granddaughter who is 1 will complain about plugs grain going the wrong direction. Good product Kreg did it again..

Out of the Box

It worked great. Little concerned with the first ones. Put to much down pressure and they came out rough. I am making low priced side tables using doug fir. Very soft. When I read the instruction after the first session I learned that light pressure is better. Started matching grain before cutting. While it looks great its going to add time to the units. After using it for a week I am a little discouraged with the quality of the plugs using doug fir. The are galled and chipped. I am using the drill on high and going slow. Going to put a vacuum on it to keep the chips under control.have to do 5 to get 2 usable ones.
