Clever Ideas for Custom Clamp Storage

Following the old workshop wisdom of “You can never have too many clamps” means you’re prepared for just about any type of assembly task. Finding enough space to store all of your clamps, though, can pose a challenge. Customizing that space to effectively store each style of clamp is just as critical. In this edition of Kreg Plus, we’ll share clever ideas for custom clamp storage.

Bar Clamp Rack

Bar Clamps are the perfect helping hands if you regularly work with larger-scale projects. One way to keep them organized and close at hand is to create a rack using PVC pipe. First, drill a series of holes, sized for the PVC, in two rails (2x4s work great). Then, rip the rails in half, insert the pieces, and screw the boards back together. This will secure the pipes. Finally, screw the rack assemblies to a piece of plywood and secure it to the wall.

Pipe Clamp Rack

If you’re looking for simplicity, this pipe clamp rack is a good example. Large broom clips hold the clamps to a 2x4 rail. The clips are spaced evenly and the clamps snap into them. The clamp heads rest securely on the 2x4, which prevents them from sliding.

Small Clamp Hanger

Unused overhead space provides a great solution for storing small clamps. One method is to use a pair of hangers to keep everything handy. The hangers are simply wide strips of hardboard with a hole drilled in one end. To make them more portable, you can hang the strips from nails.

Flexible Clamp Storage

The problem with some clamp racks is that they aren’t adjustable for different types and quantities of clamps. The rack shown below is constructed from two just basic parts: a T-track that’s attached to the wall and a series of adjustable blocks that fit over the track.

You can position the blocks to accommodate just about any size and style of clamp. And if you buy more clamps down the road, this clamp storage system is easy to expand.

Compact Clamp Storage

A quick and inexpensive idea for storing a wide variety of clamps is to use heavy-duty shelf standards and brackets. By using brackets of different lengths and positioning them for different sized clamps, you can accommodate just about any style of clamp. Just be sure to anchor the brackets and standards securely to wall studs.

Compact Clamp Storage

You can store long clamps horizontally across a pair of brackets. A board, screwed in place across two brackets, is good for smaller clamps. Individual brackets are handy for spring clamps, C-clamps, and handscrews.

Organizing clamps is about more than keeping your shop tidy. Having the right kind of storage can make working in your shop easier and more enjoyable, too.
